Introduction
Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a member of the Phlebovirus genus. It is a viral zoonosis that primarily affects animals but can also infect humans. Outbreaks of RVF can have major societal impacts, including significant economic losses and trade reductions. The disease most commonly affects livestock, causing severe illness and abortion in domesticated animals, an important income source for many.
The majority of human infections result from direct or indirect contact with the blood or organs of infected animals. The incubation period for RVF varies from 2 to 6 days. Those infected either experience no detectable symptoms or develop a mild form of the disease characterized by a feverish syndrome with sudden onset of flu-like fever, muscle pain, joint pain and headache. The virus can be detected in the blood (during illness) and in postmortem tissue by virus isolation in cell culture and by molecular techniques.
The BioPerfectus Rift Valley Fever Virus Real Time PCR Kit, based on real-time PCR technology, for the detection of RNA from Rift Valley Fever Virus. Specimens can be obtained from human whole blood and serum.
