On August 14, 2024, the WHO declared Mpox (formerly monkeypox) a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). This year, 13 African countries reported 17,541 cases and 517 deaths, with the DRC alone accounting for 16,789 cases and 511 deaths.

The rapid spread of Mpox, especially the Clade 1b strain in the DRC, is a growing concern due to its higher mortality rate. Clade 1b has also reached Europe, where the ECDC warned of likely more imported cases and urged preparedness.
