Various global health threats have recently continued to pose significant challenges across regions. Mpox (Monkeypox):

  • Over 100,000 confirmed cases and 200+ deaths as of July 31, 2024 (WHO).
  • 20,000+ cases and 600+ deaths in 13 African Union countries as of August 31, 2024 (Africa CDC).
  • All cases of MPXV clade I have been reported from the African continent apart from one reported by Sweden and one by Thailand.

Dengue Fever:

  • Philippines: Over 130,000 confirmed cases from January to August 3, with disaster status declared in several areas.
  • Brazil: Over 6.48 million cases and 5,139 deaths were reported as of August 20th, 2024—a record high (Ministry of Health).

Oropouche

H5N1 Avian Influenza:

  • Cambodia: 10 human cases reported in 2024, with 2 deaths. Since 2003, Cambodia has reported 72 cases and 43 deaths (fatality rate: 60%).
  • Global: 908 cases and 464 deaths reported across 24 countries since 2003 (fatality rate: 51%).

H5 Avian Influenza:

  • U.S.: One human case was confirmed by the CDC as of September 6, 2024, marking the 14th case this year and the first with no known occupational exposure.
