Introduction
Anthrax is a rare but serious infectious disease caused by bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis. Bacillus anthracis is a Gram-positive and rod-shaped bacterium that causes anthrax, a deadly disease to livestock and, occasionally, to humans. It is the only permanent pathogen within the genus Bacillus.
Humans generally acquire the disease directly or indirectly from infected animals, or through occupational exposure to infected or contaminated animal products. Worldwide, the estimated incidence of human anthrax decreased from between 20,000 - 100,000 cases per year in 1958 to 2,000 per year during the 1980s. The symptoms of anthrax depend on the type of infection and can take anywhere from 1 day to more than 2 months to appear. All types of anthrax have the potential, if untreated, to spread throughout the body and cause severe illness and even death.
The BioPerfectus Bacillus anthracis Real Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test, based on real-time PCR technology, for the detection of DNA from Bacillus anthracis. Specimens can be obtained from human blood.
