More than 99 % of genital herpes and 46 % of spontaneous abortions are caused by HSV-II.

The majority of HSV infections are asymptomatic and may never cause symptoms. In people who are symptomatic, HSV-1 and HSV-2 mainly differ by where the episode is. Besides, HSV-2 infection increases the risk of acquiring HIV infection by approximately three-fold.
