Second Dengue Infection Can Be More Severe than the First

On June 15, 2024, the world observes World Dengue Day, raising public awareness about dengue fever.

Dengue fever is transmitted by infected female mosquitoes, primarily the Aedes aegypti mosquito🦟. Each year, up to 400 million people are infected by a dengue virus. The year 2019 marked an unprecedented peak, with reported instances spreading across 129 countries.

The dengue virus (DENV) has four #serotypes with 30-35% sequence variation. Infection with one serotype provides long-term immunity to the same serotype and only transient immunity to the other serotypes, after which secondary infections with a different serotype increase the risk for severe dengue.

A second dengue infection can be more severe than the first. In ADE, antibodies from a previous infection bind to a new serotype of the virus but fail to neutralize it, allowing the virus to replicate more efficiently and intensifying the infection. Many who suffer repeat infections may even experience massive internal bleeding and liver damage, potentially leading to life-threatening conditions.

According to WHO guidelines, there is no specific treatment for dengue. However, early detection and appropriate healthcare reduce mortality. Rapid detection of cases with warning signs and timely referral of severe cases to tertiary facilities are crucial. BioPerfectus provides dengue diagnostic products that ensure quick and accurate detection across all clinical stages of dengue infection, support surveillance, and play a key role in public health management and disease control.
